I have a C200 1997 auto and for a while it was running perfect, but over the past couple of weeks I have noticed that the gear changing has become erratic, the gear change is not as smooth as usual and revs up to 3,000 - 3,500 (sometimes 4000 plus) before changing up.

I am not a foot to the floor merchant and this has only just started to happen. At the same time the cruise control has stopped working.

My fuel consumption has shot up because of the excess engine revving and I have noticed that the revs at idle fluctuate between 500 & 1100.

All that said it is still a great car, does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause, I have looked through the forum for similar problems and notice members suggesting a new battery, is this the most probable cause, I've had no problems starting the car, but I'm unsure how old the battery is. I've trie disconnecting the battery to clear the ECU but nothing really significant happened.

I appreciate any help as this is driving me bonkers, if I were 17 then it probably would not be a problem.

Thank you
