Any idea what has heppened to my car?

99 c230 komp auto.

Used to drive normally, but has always shifted gears with a delay. Now:

It drives like it only has 25% throttle no matter how far you press the pedal.
It will not shift to the next gear under higher throttle, it will just bounce off a rev limiter at about 3500 rpm until you let off the throttle.
It shifts slowly (compared to other automatics)
It will still shift through all the gears, and still reach highway speeds.

unplugged MAF, now the car is not rev limited. But still lacks power.

So... does this mean the problem is the MAF, and I will get my power back when I get a new one?

You need to get the codes read from the ECU

Looks like the classic MAF sensor symptoms which don't always throw up a fault code.
Try cleaning it as per the excellent DIY procedure, very easy to do, just don't touch the sensor itself with anything. Use Iso Propyl Alcohol for best results, I drenched it thoroughly to remove deposits and then dried it off with a hair dryer. Worked for me and still in use after another 70,000 miles!

got a new bosch MAF, seemed to fix the problem.

now, months later:

suddenly, the car has no power at all. not even drivable like last time.
gas pedal has no effect. car idles very lumpy, or just dies. smells rich.

however, once you start the car, it is normal for about 1 second, then the above happens.

Why not unplug the MAF and see what happens, try it

Seem to have a similar problem with the wife's SLK. Runs fine and is driveable but seems a bit flat with the revs limited at times. Currently on the original MAF and when removed all seems nice and clean. Is 9+ years pushing it with these sensors?

mine is no longer revlimited and lacking power. Now, it have no power, and no throttle responce. Not drivable at all.

Now all that happens is:

start it up, runs normally for 1 second, then stalls.
After about 20 attempts, it actually starts, runs normally for 1 second, and then sputters and chugs and stays running, but with no throttle responce what so ever. Will drive at idle only.

Unplugged MAF, no difference in anything.

problem solved... and its not good.

its winter here. The engine has blow-by. Its too much for the water separator to handle. The blow-by acumulates in the lowest part of the IC piping and freezes. Eventually, there is so much frozen water in there that enough air to go anything more than idle speed can not get through, hence no power.

I disconnected the crankcase ventalation tube, but, it now lets fumes into the cabin via the heater.
