Hi

Recently acquired a 1994 W202, after a long run (360miles) it appears to need a bit of oil. Does anyone know if this could be down to it being run on Mobil1, should I change to a semi synthetic?

Cheers
ps car has covered 168K

How much oil is it actually using ? The M111 engine, like yours does not normally use oil between changes even at high mileages but it obviously depends on how well it has been looked after previously and the type of useage it has had.

What is the engine? The diesels can use a bit.

Thanks George, I just saw that on the other thread. :) I've just driven back from North Wales, so yes my psychic powers are a bit low, I will top them up with some Leffe Radieuse

Spoken to local MB garage about this who tell me that it is due to hard piston rings causing excessive heat and slight oil burn on long runs - not convinced myself. The car will have an oil change at the weekend and then i'll monitor it,
anyone have anything decent to say about oil additives on the market - are they beneficial for high mileage engines???

Just by observing the running of the car will give you the answer

If it is using oil,it must go somewhere.

Pistons /rings, remove the oil filler cap is it blowing back when the engine running, if it is,that is crankcase compression due to worn rings.

This would be shown by smoke during acceleration. If it smokes say after sitting at traffic lights then its valves. To check if it is valves, you need a compression tester. remove all of the plugs,do a compression test on each bore, and note the reading. Squirt a little oil down the bore,if the compression is then higher, the rings are worn, if it stays the same it is the valves / guides.

In my experience stay away from addatives that lay claim to improved compression, less oil consomption, they invariably clog or sludge something up. Just stick to good quality oil and good filtration
