Hi All

I'm looking to buy a 1998 W202 C240. The SRS warning light is on, and I saw on an auto electrian receipt in the history folder that it was some sort of problem with the drivers airbag (the car had been with the electrician to fix some other problem of a wire melting on the brake loom or something?).

Sorry I can't be more specific, but my question is - any idea what kind of problems there can be with the drivers airbag? I'm concerned why the owner didn't get it fixed when it was with the electrician, could this be because of excessive cost involved? I have searched for this info and can't find.

Any help much appreciated.

Needs to be reset on Star or another diags system like carsoft. I dont think there is a proceedure outside of Star for the reset.

Could be the steering wheel was removed and the airbag disconnected with the battery still connected hence the light.

Might be a simple fix, you could disconnect the battery and remove the airbag as the connector on the back might be unplugged.

Difficult to assume without having a look etc.

Once the SRS lamp is on, it can only be removed when plugged into STAR. If anyone has been working on the car with SRS components disconnected and the ignition is turned on, this will put the SRS lamp on, and store it as a fault. Without plugging the car into STAR you will never know if the car has a fault or not, and some SRS components are expensive.

Best to find an indie with STAR to see what is wrong

If it does need an airbag it's going to be expensive and if the electrician has put a fault with the drivers airbag on the note then I imagine your assumption about it being to expensive to fix is right. Ours did the same a couple of years ago though and I seem to remeber that the fix was a connector rather than the bag itself so its worth getting it diagnosed. Worst case, you could live without it.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

If I buy the car (still bashing out a deal with the seller but hopefully getting there) I'll take it to an independant specialist for checking.

Out of interest, if it does require an expensive new airbag and I decided not to replace, could I get the bulb extinguished? I find warning lights very annoying on the dash.

Cheers again.

You can fit a 3.3 ohm resistor over the plug for the air bag

It may be the seat belt. I had the same problem with the passenger airbag and the fault was for seat belt. U have to try it if it is normally as the other seat belts the problem is somewhere else.
