W202: Why doesn't my emergency keycard work?

The emergency key card supplied with my '96 C200 doesn't work. The battery check looks OK (I even tried new batteries), and it does unlock the car via the keyhole, but not via IR. Do I need a new one?

Related question: what batteries does the normal key require? I ask because I've only got 1 that works (the other has no batteries) and I'm loathe to take it apart in case I end up locked out!

Thanks

i thought it was me. My keycard is little more than a key shaped bit of plastic with a key slotted in the end. Key to open the door, rest to start the car. There is no battery, button or IR transmitter. I am told that they work for a limited number of times but thats not the problem in this case.

My W202 key card does not work via IR iether. It does take batteries and it does have an IR transmitter (its stamped with the words "infra red transmitter") It has a key slotted in the end. From reading the manual i understand that if you open the car with a key in the door the immobilser is not disabled and you can't start the car.....I would like to get my card working too.

The standard key and keycard take the same batteries Duracell CR2025

The card with my 99 sl reads: 'Funk Card' 'Remote Control Card' 'Spare Key'.

It is not infra red as you describe yours. It says on my manual that the spare keycard is only for radio control, and not the IR (used for comfort closing). And it works.

If your emmergency card is only IR, you will need to point it at the driver or passenger door handle sensor from a close distance.

EDIT It is also posible that the card needs re-syncrenicing with the central locking.

batterys

get your batterys from an mb dealer.... their cheaper than most other shops!!!!
if the batterys have been out <or flat> for more than a few seconds you have to sync the key........
sit in the car, press the unlock button hold for a second or 2.... put a key in ignition and turn till warning lights come on.... remote should work... sometimes you need to repeat a few times till it decides to work!
always a good idea to keep a spare set of batterys in the glovebox

The proceedure for synchronising remote to central locking is different for my car.
  • Briefly press the 'lock' or 'unlock' on the remote twice
  • Within 30secs put key in ignition, and turn to position '2'
  • The central locking system is then operational from that remote

Thanks for this. I used this procedure to fix both the key card and the spare remote - magic!
