Anybody suggest cause of this problem, on startup when cold, the tiptronic is locked out, and no display of gear selected shows. If I overide lockout (with small rod) it stays locked in 2nd, until maybe 20 mins then display appears and transmission will shift ok.
If warm on startup same problem but lockout time is only maybe 5 mins.

many thanks

Did you have it checked on MB diagnostics (will this even show as error code?) or just sub the part?.
My Haynes manual does not even show a temp sensor or even tiptronic .

Could be the gear selector itself. This is a known weak spot on the ML. I would imagine that yours is a very similar type. Have it checked out with the diagnostic.

I did not know that, is there a common fault then? My ML tiptronic would not engage as I had bent the crossmember that supports the gearbox while off roading recently, changed the crossmember and its been ok since.

After a while this wont change at all. There is a servo you replace. I had same problem, was intermittent and then suddenly permanent. Its a well known one at this stage and an easy enough fix.
