As part of a persistent intermittent no crank battle I've confirmed the ECM is at fault. When opened up there was the well known build up of oil from the engine wiring harness and camshaft sensors - nasty. However, only the start circuit has been affected. The tin cover on these is glued and it looked a real pain - heating things up to soften the silicon was begging for collateral damage. It turns out that the lid is flat sided and is a simple snug fit inside a 3 mm wide gully - the glue is soft enough cold to slice and scrape out. Take a fresh Swann Morten No 26 scalpel or X-Acto craft knife and scribe around the edges. Scrape it out with a sharp hooked pick. Best done to a long drink and your favourite radio program. It's a hour but it's safe. When all clear use a thin but wide bladed knife and carefully go around the edge gently teasing the lid away from the aluminium base. Wash away the oil with plenty of contact cleaner spray and if it all looks clean and tidy you might want to build up courage and replace the failed component. Sensible people will tape it back together and send it to ecu.de in Germany. There may be a UK option but I can't find one who is experienced with this particular Siemens unit. Two things I need to know if anyone can help i.e. - WHERE ON THIS BOARD IS THE EPROM ? and WHERE IS THE COMPONENT WHICH CONTROLS THE STARTER RELAY COIL GROUND SWITCHING ? Tough questions eh ?

Ah well - nobody knows then. Not to worry - this story has an amusing happy ending. After several cleans with Iso Propanol it was left on the bench as a useful spare with the proviso that the car would need a jumper feed when used. Yesterday, I needed it to compare readings on a suspect MAF output in case the other ECM was telling me lies. B"""er me - it has cured itself and started on the key !! We now have two good coded to the car ECMs - luxury. Endless amusement.
