W203 c180 no crank no start

Hi guys I've just fitted a used gear selector as had a problem with the car going into limp mode and then lost the gear display on the dash. Fitted new one ok but now the car Will not crank or start checked fuses and start relay all ok. Got car started from starter motor only to find gears were wrong 2 neutrals and 2 reverses ?. So what have I done wrong too fix one thing and cause two more problems

Bit of a guess..brain thinks car in gear so wont allow start.is selector new or used.? Is it same pt nu or modified pt ?
Try battery disconnect shifter disconnect shifter in park .reconnect shifter ,reconnect batt with key out.try again.no luck get any fault codes looked at ..

Sorry just re read yr post..used shifter. Try above if no joy suggest read codes ,look another shifter

I had the car going into limp mode but it was after a differential refit - turned out to be the wrong(very slightly) diff ratio so gearbox sensor only let me have limp and 2 gears.

Did you disconnect the electrics when replacing the shifter/selector, i.e. key out of the ignition?
What position was the shifter in when you removed the old one?
Did you have the shifter in the same position when installing the new one?
