The parking brake has started to stick recently. When it's applied it's fine, then when I pull the release handle, the brake lamp on the panel doesn't always go out and the dash turns red if you set off  The ratchet mechanism on the parking brake fell apart some time ago, but this didn't have any effect on the action - it's only recently that the sticky problem has occurred. Any ideas?

I've got a complete new assembly for the parking brake inside the car but I have never fitted it as I haven't got a clue how to get the old one off and replace it - it looks like you have to take the centre console out and pull back the carpets but I don't know how to do it without using a hammer  I suppose a workshop manual would tell me but I haven't found a decent one yet

Take up the slack on the adjuster under the seat that will put the light out on the dash. You need WIS on your PC this will show you how to replace the mechanism inside the car.

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
When you lift the inspection panel you will see the adjusting nut at the rear just below the equaliser

there should be 5 clicks with a pressure of 170n on the pedal

2 turns = 1 click

All done and dusted thanks very much

Next job is to replace the actual pedal assembly as I bought a brand new one off ebay for not a lot of money - my ratchet mechanism has gone on the old one (plastic broke) so I'm going to replace the full assembly. I think the new one is a follower instead of a leader too, so that's a bonus :D

That's what I like about you - you're so knowledgeable :D

I assume from your post that the plastic parts are available from Mr Mercedes-Benz, so, I'll have to check that one out - unless you have part numbers for the bits of plastic which will save me a lot of time and effort replacing the entire mechanism?????!!!!!!!

Thanks TV old bean - I suppose I would have felt a little less silly if I had remembered that diagram from before  It will probably be a 60 then so I'll get on to Mr Mercedes and sort it out - I can be so dim sometimes

hello again,

You need both the clip and the pin, my advise would be to buy 2 of the pins as they are very fraglie and break easilly, and you might not get it right first time and the only way to get the ratchet bit off again is to break the pin.

saves another trip to the dealer.

I'll order two pins then - thanks for the tip. I don't do trips to the dealer though - it's a 90 mile round trip :D But they do post them out to me for nowt
