I am waiting for a CP sensor to arrive, £41 Eurocarparts inc post, as I have a CPS fault code and the car keeps going into limp on and off. I know about where it is on the bell housing but before I tackle it do I go from the top or underneath, I havnt looked for it yet and not done one before, looks a bit awkward, any advice would be a great help, thanks.

Hi you would be better changing the sensor from under the vehicle (recommend proper ramp) disconnect the battery, remove starter motor, now you can see crank sensor & disconnect plug, now the tricky bit the sensor is held in with an allen screw that is a bit akward it helps if you have a flexi head 1/4 drive ratchet. Then reassemble parts removed, reconnect battery & programme windows. Good luck John

Replaced the crank sensor today, a pig of a job to get at, still has the problem, bad starting and runs in limp mode most of the time, max revs 3k, any ideas?

check the high pressure fuel pump for any signs of fuel leaking, This unit is in the front of the engine (looks like a v shape) we have had these leaking very slightly & will cause bad starting, (excessive cranking to start)
Another known fault is the camshaft sensor located on the rocker cover top at the back, very easy to replace. John.

I relised today that the cam sensor was swapped over for a previous fault, the problem was the fuel regulator that time, so I tried it again today and the fault moved to the donor car, sorted, pricey little part though at £87+vat but I can now cancel the main dealer booking, thanks for your input.

W203 C230 Kompressor Coupe Crank Sensor Removal

Hi Guys,

Is it possible to remove/replace the crankshaft sensor from the top with the airbox and maf removed? So many pipes and obstacles in the way. I got as far as having removed the Airbox and MAF. Alternatively, in this post it says from underneath and you have to remove the starter motor.

Thanks

many change them by feel, just the one plug and one screw, not sure on the 170 if you can get to it from the wheel arch.
