w203 code reader.

Howdy folks, hope someone can help me with this. A few weeks ago, really cold morning i started the car and it stuttered a bit, turned it off for a few mins and started it again, ran fine.
Since then i have the yellow engine diagnostic light on, car is running fine, anyway i decided to get a code reader myself and see what the issue was.
So, off i go to ebay and buy a reader for 20 quid, plug it in and get "err", something to do with the protocol is not compatible. The seller has told me that the controller is not can bus enabled and if the car is it wont work. Are all w203 can bus enabled ?

Yes im afraid they are, only the STAR diagnostic machine works properly, although i have a friend who has a machine to switch of management light,and it reads some of the fault codes but not them all, i will try and find out its name

It is a mine field out there regarding code readers etc, as Delboy said. Some only do management codes, the ones that can code the whole car cost an arm and a leg, Most MB's are fully compliant from around 2000 and on, or new models after that time
