Ok looked threw the forum, so far both tyres are worn the same, and are the same make 245/40/17 (goodyear). now the cruise control works fine when on a straight road, and turning a corner to the left hand side, but as soon as i would touch the steering to a right hand corner it cuts off. Ive worked out that there's some sort of safety feature built in to stop ya going to hard into a corner on cruise control, but when cornering to the left i can go round the corners while cruise control is still engaged. its just beginning to get a wee bit annoying when cornering to the right and disengaging all the time

I can go around the M6/M56 junction to the right at silly speeds (70Mph ish) on cruise and never had an issue with the cruise cutting out. I would still suspect a tire size issue.

As Blobcat stated - I agree with him and my money is on tyre size too.

How about a dodgy ABS sensor, or wiring.

But I suppose that would bring on the ABS light, too..?

Aye!

Only two tyre sizes are mentioned, but what about the other two, I wonder?

fronts are 215/45/17. also made sure and balanced all the wheels. I could go round corners at silly speeds with cc on going to the left, but the slightest corner to the right at say 45mph and it cuts off. abs light isint on. i was looking at the back axel and noticed a box with a rod coming off it attached to the anti roll bar, which i presume is to do with the cc, as in cornering and this detects how much roll is on the car and cuts it off??

Nothing to do with c/c whatsoever. C/c is't that intelligent.

215/45 and 245/40 - one hell of a difference there.!

I had a tyre mis-match on my ML. Kept disengaging. Got matching tyres all round - no problems since :D

Have you recentered your steering?

The car needs to know when the steering is centered. There is a sensor for this. It can be recalibrated the instructions are in you handbook. It needs to be done if the battery is removed etc. you need to move the steering wheel 3 times from lock to lock or something similar.

Try this before spending money.

If it out of alignment many strange faults can emerge affecting esp bas and cruise control.

As alec2, reset the steering angle sensor, turn full lock left then right 3 times.

Its possible the senor is off centre, so when you turn right it thinks you are turning more sharpely than you really are.

Do you have xenon headlights?

This box and rod is the auto-levelling sensor, which in conjunction with a similar set-up on the font dynamically control the headlamp level to stop you blinding oncoming drivers.

I don't have xenons but do have cruise and I don't have this sensor

As Whitenemesis suggests regarding steering angle sensor, this will be at fault IMO, regarding tyre sizes different profile tyres front to back on the staggered wheel set up is perfectly normal.

Also if resetting the steering sensor does not fix the problem remember that the system works by sensing the speed of all 4 wheels. If one of these sensors fails on say "Right hand" turns the system wiil be upset.

These sensors are down by the wheel somewhere and could be upset by a loose wheel bearing for instance, so jacking up each corner in turn and waggling the wheel may be worth trying.

The experts will know more about these sensors.

ok so i reset the steering sensors and that made no difference, how ever i picked up a flat on the drivers rear and fired the spare on.... and guess what cruise control works perfect so its now running a 245/40/17 on the passenger side and a 225/50/16 until i get the flat fixed. Just thought id update !
