W203 Door Lock Removal

On Saturday I set about removing the front passenger door lock on a C220 in order to try and cure the bouncing problem. Removing the lock from its position was easy enough, but I could see absolutely no way of removing it from the door without taking away the metal rail for the window mechanism. That item is riveted in place, so I was not keen to drill out the rivets.

Is that really the only way to remove the lock from the door or am I being stupid?

I will look it up later and you will need a new lock

No you are right they must be drilled out and then re riveted.

You must also undo the window screws and manually slide window to top and then move the regultor to one side and then remove lock.

Thanks for the confirmation. I didn't want to start destroying things too soon. I also managed to dislocate the plastic guide that goes above the door handle. After trying to refit it for half an hour I gave up. Is there a way to get it back in? I guess the removal of the bars might help.

Do you mean the white plastic guide. that does go back but can be a pain, remove the seal at the bottom of window and the white plastic bit hooks over the top of the door metal, its best to refit when lock roughly in place as it clips on to that as well.

good luck

That's the bit - though in my car it was black. I'll make a second attempt even although the window does work fine without it.

I don't beleive it. Two days ago I went through the trauma of fitting a new lock (most of the trouble was getting that plastic guide back in). The new lock was working perfectly, but this morning it too started bouncing and failing to unlock. Could anything else be causing this or have I just been unfortunate enough to get another faulty lock from MB?

The only other thing is the rubber grommet where the rod passes through it, put some silicon on that

OK. I'll give that a try - I'll do anything to avoid having to take it out again.

This really was a nightmare. It turned out to be something to do with the release cable. If there was just too much strain it made the lock trigger away two or three times before going down. I could see absolutely nothing that was stretching the cable, but eventually I got it working. It seemed as if opening the door was pulling the plastic sheath out of position in the lock and then it wasn't retracting back into the little plastic holder.
