Hi, we have a 220 cdi 51reg that has suddenly started to use more fuel, it has gone from 45mpg to 35mpg on the readout and it is only doing about 350 miles per tank, any ideas? Steve.

Have you been carrying a lot of fat passengers? :D

If it's an automatic, is the box behaving properly and changing at the right points?

Try cleaning your air mass meter. Check the sticky threads at the top of the page, they're laid out excellently.

Update, the car cut out on Sunday and was brought home by the AA, it was taken to a local indie garage on Monday and its still not running they say there are no fault codes, they got it started today with easystart and drove it 10 miles but when it was turned off it wouldnt go again, I dare say this will explain the fuel usage if it ever gets fixed.

Sounds like over fuelling.

Any sensor that the engone management uses to adjust misture could be responsible for this, but as it's far enough out to affect starting. I'd suspect something catastrophic like a wire disconnected....

I've got a 2001 C220CDI which had a similar problem last year. Although the performance wasn't as badly affected, it did refuse to start. The fault was eventually diagnosed as a fuel control valve. Once replaced, the car ran as well as ever.

After having the car all week I spoke to the garage yesterday and it still wasnt fixed, they suggested fitting a new high pressure pump £600 but when it arrived the dealer had sent the wrong pump, so this morning I removed a pump from another car took it there and fitted it myself, still no go unless it was started using easystart and then it wouldnt restart, so we got it running and brought it back to my workshop, at this point Im realising that I have more chance of sorting it than the so called specialist, I swopped over the fuel pressure valve from the other car and the problem moved with it, sorted, when I had another look at the faulty valve the tiny o ring on it was split I found one in the workshop refitted it and its fixed. The garage wanted me to wait up to two weeks for a pump I didnt need, dealer said there wasnt one in the country, I wonder who would have finished up paying for that, I am waiting now for the bill from the garage and then I will give them mine for loss of earnings! I hope this will help someone if they get the same problem, thanks for your input, Steve.
