W203 wiper problem

This morning the wipers on my C270 CDi started playing up.

I was sitting in the drive and put the wipers on - nothing, on any setting. I checked the fuse which was fine, so assumed it would be the relay.

Not having a clue which one of the hundreds it is, I though it would have to go to MB tomorrow, but being desparate to nip out and the rain not being too bad, I risked it.

As soon as the car was rolling the wipers started to work, on all settings. They worked fine until I stopped at some lights when they stopped again with the wiper blade vertical. As soon as I started moving again they came back on. As far as I'm aware the car hasn't got rain sensitive wipers (if it has they've never worked).

I still think its a relay fault (unless somebody suspects different). Can somebody tell me where it is please.

Is your bonnet closed correctly, switch on the bonnet catch to stop wipers when bonnet open!!!!

Ah, now things are starting to make sense. The bonnet open warning started coming, but as the bonnet seemed to be closed properly, I assumed it was a switch fault (which it probably is). Where is the switch please?

Twist the end of the stalk where you switch on your wiper, there could be dusts or contamination.

Watch out for the spring that pop out so you know how to put it back.

Mind switches on when I didn't, open the end cap and found a thread of dusts built up over the years, probably interfering with the spring and contacts switch.

Also be aware that when the car is stationary and the driver or passenger window is open the wipers will not operate.

If you drive with the window open and come to a halt (e.g. at traffic lights) the wipers will stop...

Thats sorted it, thanks cochelle and the rest of you blokes!

Thanks for the additional info as well Nemesis.

The catch had pushed the switch through which was dangling about under the slam panel.

Just to demonstrate my infinite knowledge on these cars (thanks Malcolm..) I now have to print a retraction.....

The wipers do NOT stop when the front windows are opened, only when the doors are opened....:Oops::Oops:

Clearly one would not be driving with the doors open, so my epxlanation of a possible reason for the OP's problem was, erm, crap :Oops::Oops:

My apologies for misleading you....
