last night i drove into town and i don't think there was any rain, on my way home it was dark and i had some dirt on the windscreen so i gave the wiper stalk a press to squirt some water on the screen and wipe it, so far so good, it wiped a few times as normal but when it stopped it rested about 1/3rd the way up the windscreen, so much so that you can see the road underneath the wipers, obviously annoying

got home, powered off the car, powered it on again hoping the wipers would reset themselves, they didnt, in fact they went down and back up to 1/3rd... powered off again and gently used my hands to push the wipers down, they went down to the correct position, powered on again, they rose to 1/3rd....

so, why is it doing this and how can I fix it ?
cheers !

A diesel
The crank arm from the drive spindle has slipped due to the securing nut coming a bit loose.

There is a nut on the motor drive that you must tighten

The bolt is on top 150, you can see the hole in the middle of 20 that is the mechanism that drives the blades,,, the bolt 150 needs to be tightened

Before you start you need to First Park the wiper motor by turning the wipers on, then turning them off, AT THE STALK SWITCH, wait 2 seconds for the motor to finish it’s sweep and come to a stop, then remove the keys from ignition.

The wiper blades will be 1/3 the way up the screen so you will have to undo the nut at the Red arrow and lift the arm off the motor, this will free both wiper arms and allow you to move them to their correct position at the bottom of windscreen, the nut, at Red arrow, should then be retightened. HOLD THE ARM WITH A VICE GRIP, (example in picture below) while you loosen and retighten this nut at Red arrow.

If you put up a picture or 2 your wiper arms and motor area we can explain a bit better what you have to do.

You have to remove the bottom windscreen trim to get at the motor, don’t take the wiper arms off, all you will be doing is removing a nut, realigning the wiper arms and then retightening the said nut, the nut on the extreme right of the picture below is the one you will be dealing with… its on a W211 but much the same contraption as your W203.

You should never have bought a Mercedes with more than one windscreen wiper blade… you should never have sold the old W202... seriously it’s the same fault as the single blade not parking in its correct position, namely, turn the wiper on when its snowed to the screen and the park position will be lost, i.e. the nut slips resulting in the blade/s not parking at the bottom of the windscreen.

I know you don’t have any snow now but the nut could have been weakened in the past and turning it on the other night, on a dry screen, was to stannous on that particular nut and it sliped.

Watch out for alignment marks, usually lines mark on the wiper mechanism casing to aid correct assembly and ensuring accurate alignment of the wiper blades at the bottom of the windscreen.

It can happen (nut slips) to individual blades, example… http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?p=620964 … but if both your blades are working in unison then it will be as suggested, the nut at the motor.
