Few days after noticing the car losing power under normal driving the EML came on. Local mechanic changed the the map sensor next to the MAF which slightly improved things, but he shrugged and said without an EML he didn't know what it is. Took it to another mechanic when the EML came back on and he said mechanic 1 changed the wrong map sensor and ordered another, fitted lower down on the right. Car was better again and has done hundreds of miles since without EML. But most days it's duff. I still notice occasional power drop outs while driving normally, but most noticeable is under hard acceleration above 3k revs. Power delivery is really poor with bad kangarooing. Told it would need a while for it to settle, but as mentioned, it's done hundreds of miles now. Given it a caning and at 5k revs I honestly thought I'd killed it, sounded like intercooler pipe bursting, but they're new and mechanic assures me pipes are all ok. So maybe some sort of blow off valve?

Any ideas would be really useful. Taking it back to mechanic 2 next week, but clues would be great.

Have you taken it to a merc specialist or just a general mechanic?

Have you got a local taxi firm that runs a fleet of MB E220's and/or C220's and do their own maintenance? I have down here in east Kent (Ashford) and they have full genuine MB Star/Xentry and are considerably better and cheaper than MB Ashford.
I'm surprised that so far no-one has come up with a recommended indie in your area - if there is not one, and no joy with the local taxi firms, you may need to bite the bullet and pay for a STAR session at MB North Wales - which happens to be where my SLK came from!

Thanks for the reply, I don't see any Marc taxi's around here, so I don't think so. Great idea though, I bought it because often when you get in a taxi abroad, they're Merc diesels, I figured they've got to be reliable. ‍
The car is drivable at the moment, I've cleaned the MAF and it seemed to improve things for a day or two, it seems better with the cold weather too. My next service isn't due for another 12000 miles so I think I might treat it to a proper Marc service, I don't think it's anything serious. Just annoying when you need full power.
The two dealers closest I think are both Inchcape. They dealt with the (godforsaken) red paint issue and resprayed 90% of the vehicle for me a year or so back. Might give them a call when it's due.... and do some saving between now and then.
