When stopping on a slope and park is engaged (car absolutely stationary and parking brake applied first to avoid movement) sometimes you hear a very slight clunk underneath.

If you hear that, when going back into "drive" you get quite a bad clunk and jolt from under the car.
Seems the clunk comes from rear end but not sure.

It only does that if you feel something when engaging park.

It also only does this if on a slope but not every time - about 50%

No other issues.

I do not allow the car to move before engaging park.

Do they all do this sometimes?

Have you got the fancy new automatic parking brake , or do you apply it manually

Yes they all do that.
The only way to minimise it is using the following procedure:
1. Stop the car and apply parking brake.
2. Put car in N
3. Release foot brake and allow car to settle on parking brake.
4. Move gear selector to P.

Many thanks for this tip - will try that.
Yes it has button push parking break.
Why do they do this - noise it makes is quite bad sometimes!

It results from the car moving on the handbrake slightly putting force onto the parking pawls in the gearbox. When you then move the car out of P the force releases with a bang.
Nothing to worry about - it sounds worse than it is.
