Hello all,

I have bought a salvage CLK 430 convertible and amongst other problems I have is that the Electric soft top isnt working !!:( Can anyone explain the most common issues with the electric roof ?
I put down the windows by about 3/4 inches and then hit the switch on the center console and all I heard was a clicking sound in the rear;) and nothing moved. where should I start ?

Thank you

First you must memorize the windows and rollbar if fitted.

With ignition turned to 2,, close windows, and hold the button in the up mode for 10 sec. Do the same for each one raise roll bar and hold that button up for 10 sec.

If non of that works, then try it with the windows right down

The roll bar is the rear head rests, and there should still be a button on the control pannel above the radio

you can take out the rear seat base and back (few bolts) and have access to all the pneumatic pumps back there - check stuff with ampmeter. thats where i would start. You have checked all fuses aswell?

As suggested above, checking fuses is the first port of call.

Next:

There is a relay fitted to the pump. Failure of this relay stopped my roof (W208 2.3) from playing ball. I am not saying that is the problem you have but below is cheap and fool proof method checking the relay.

The relay fitted to the roof pump unit is the same relay as used for the fuel pump which is fitted just forward of the battery. Swap them over and try the roof again. You do not need to remove the big panel (fitted behind the rear seat in the boot) to do this, as there is a circular access hole through which you can change the relay and also visually check the hyd fluid level. The access hole is small so you may the help of a small handed person to assist as I was able to remove the relay but unable to replace it! Remember the orientation of the relay when you remove it as that will aid in re-fitting.
If you cannot replace the relay using this method all is not lost as you will simply have to resort to removing the whole panel which (if memory serves me correctly) is about 10 bolts or so.

Once the relays are swapped try the roof... if it works then you have a result! If the roof still doesn't work try and start the engine. If it will not start then the relay that was fitted to the roof pump was definitely at fault and you will have eliminated one fault.

There is an excellent thread (with images) by Unit504 that will be of help at:
