I need to replace the complete instrument cluster as the speedo is running slow or not at all. I have sourced a new part for around £400 and can get hold of the tool to remove the cluster. What is the proceedure and will I need to take it to a Merc dealer to have it programmed or is the mileage info etc in the main computer memory?
Thanks for any help.

The cluster will need to be coded to the car. Is it brand new? Or seconded hand? The milage is stored in the cluster and in another module, they must match or the cluster will shut down

The info in your old cluster will be uploaded into STAR, and down loaded into your new one

Not quite right Malcolm. You have to enter the cluster ID code via STAR, the codings and mileage are then transmitted automatically from a vehicle control unit into the new cluster.

I cant discover which control unit that is though......

I was right or near enough, the info of what the car is and what it has got is all stored in the cluster, but it is the car that has to be plugged into STAR,not the cluster, and this also applies to down load the old info

you have to remember the engine ECU is the main carrier of the milage, with-out that you wont be-able to re-code the ICM!

I Have never heard of that before Whitenemesis.

Malcolm is right, the coding's are read by star from the control unit IC (instrument cluster) and transferred into the new one. The mileage is then entered after the specific coding's have been imputed.

If the codings cannot be gathered from the old cluster then you can go through them on the new one manually but you still need to know what they are and need a star to do it.

There are a few control units that store the mileage on the car IC Engine and EIS.

If a new cluster is fitted with out coding, it will copy the mileage from the EIS. But some coding will not match your car and may give errors and faults.

The point I have been trying to get across is that all the data is held within another control unit in the car. Entering the correct ID code releases that data to be written (by the CANbus system) directly to the cluster. Star is only involved in inputting that ID code.

This is why installing a used cluster and not having that correct ID code will result in a mis-match of data and the cluster will lock out.

Ellsy, I am reading this from a Well Informed Source ;)

If you read WIS it tells you that the info is stored in the cluster.

I also do not think that the CAN bus writes anything.

Yes it is stored in the cluster and another control module.

Under instruction from Star the control module releases the data to the new cluster (which is currently blank, empty) It does this via the CANbus.
