I don't think my aux heater is working any more, pump runs well and rest function works fine.
There is a switch next to the ash tray, when used there is no change in engine tone (i.e. no current draw)
I removed the vacuum tank and the large cable that comes from the alternator, using a test light I gave the connection 12v+. My test light did not light up (open circuit I suppose) Mercedes want £350 for a complete unit or £250 for the element. I have ordered the gasket which will allow me to take it apart and look at the element.
I have found a second hand one for £100+vat.
Any advice please on checking it further or more accurately.

Dealer sent a letter offering labour @ £40 hr and 10% off parts, so I took the car to them and had a new one fitted.
With labour that cheap I thought I'd take advantage.
