Has anyone removed, cleaned and refitted the Exhaust Gas recirculating valve. ER where exactley is it?The car smokes on take-off if accelerated hard, on gentle driving all is well and returns the lower than normal 44mpg (imperial measure). Mercedes quoted £120 per hour for six hours work! plus spares!Where can I find a workshop manual for W210 with 320 cdi? I think the car is immense, especaiily with a H&H tuning chip, WOW!

The fault will not be the EGR valve, if faulty it causes lump idle and smoking at idle only, it is not in use during acceleration.

Stun,

Are you sure its the EGR? I note that you've got a tuning chip, which will no doubt 'optimise' the fuelling. In actual fact what happens is that on high load the chip overfuels the engine - thus giving off more smoke. Switch the chip off temporarily and see if it makes a difference. By the way, on hard acceleration most diesels will smoke as overfuelling is generally the only way to get a (reluctant) diesel to accelerate as quick as we expect.

I agree with Clive here. The smoke on hard acceleration is most likely due to the chip. My E300TD used to smoke badly when accelerating hard until I replaced the fuel and boost maps with the originals, as it had been re-mapped by a previous owner.

Interesting point here, Reading my Swedish Motor magazine today, A KCR Racing chip was fitted to a BMW535D, apart from knocking ½ sec off the 0-60time (6sec) the exhaust was cleaner than the original and qualified for a lower tax band.

Awesome 44mpg, thats really good!!

It certainly is. Best I ever managed was 40.4 on a journey. It was the dullest trip I've ever driven.

Simple but sometimes very effective - chuck a couple of bottles of injector cleaner fluid (about £13 per 500 ml) into a full fuel tank and drive it hard for the next couple of hundred miles.

On a Volvo 940 TD I had, which smoked like hell under hard acceleration, we simply blanked off the EGR which totally solved the problem with no harm to fuel consumption or performance. That was actually a Volvo mod. to the Volkswagen straight-six diesel with tacked-on turbo they used in those days, never a happy marriage, and I've no idea what Mercedes recommend.

On the subject of diesel chipping, what would members recommend for a 2000 'W' E320 CDI with 80,000 miles that returns an average 39 m.p.g.? Leave well alone, I wouldn't be surprised to hear you say! But that extra bit of grunt between about 55-75 m.p.h. would be very welcome ...

IMHO leave well alone, if you want the 55-75 to fly knock it into 3rd then press the loud pedal. I think the 320 is a nice balance between economy and power.

i agree with the comments to the smoking under acceleration for chipped cars. however just because a car has 80k on it should be no reason not to throw a chip in (as long as it is from a reputable chip mfr) i say that because cheaper one will just crank up the boost. what you have to remember the car mfr has to map the car to run anywere in the world regardless of fuel quality and this causes a compramise when it comes to mapping the engine. the chip mfr's re-map the car to run on good quality fuel, so they optimise the ecu. this is why very often emmisions come down, more power, bettter economy and general all round better performance.
i remember BMW getting there hand slapped for handing out chipped press cars when they launched there M3. if you look after your car and you want to chip it i would have no hesitation. keep your driving style the same and there will be no problems, issues happen when all of a sudden a car thet has led a dosile life gets ragged all of a sudden every day. chipped or not that will cause problems.

Our E320CDI estate 2001 was fitted with a Powerchip from East Coast Racing at 104k mls. The difference in power is noticeable. Hit the loud pedal at ~55mph and the acceleration has to be felt to be believed! It feels as quick as my 500E (and that being sympathetic to the 500E). The warranteed figures are 20% additional power and 10% extra torque (380lbft).
I have concluded that the normal driving particularly around town results in an increase in consumption of about 10%. Longer steady state driving shows similar if not the same fuel consumption. The E320CDI is fitted with an auto which governs the change up speed. Extra fuel economy appears applicable with manual boxes where higher gears can be held longer with the chipped car.
Another downside of the chip is that the engine is noisier - bigger bangs! as its fed with more fuel at critical points.
I have however, achieved 46mpg on a trip from Oxford to Leics cruising at 80-85mph (70mph officer) using BP Ultimate diesel.
