Hiya fellas,

My 51 plate e320 cdi had a command fitted by the previous owner and doesn't have a jack socket in the glovebox.

How can i tell if the cable attached to the crappy kenwood cd changer in the boot is a fibre optic cable?

I my only option for ipod/mp3 connection a denison?

There will be a bright yellow or orange twin fiber optic cable with odd shaped squarish connector with 2 leds in the box,, these cables are very stiff and must not be bent

ah!
mine sadly doesn't look like that.
it's a fairly thick cable with what looks like a din plug.

You can add the cable,,but its a lot of work as the inside needs gutting to install it you could use a card reader these things are only tiny and install it under the dash or in the dash

are there any other options that'd connect to my cable?

That is the snag,,the information comes down this fiber optic link to display the info in the comand,, and this cable D2b optics could be retro fitted, but then you would need a new changer as well,,you could pop into a breaker and take a look at this cable

Fibre optic changers are crap and good ones are like rocking horse poo.

Just have a look on e bay to see.

Its the yellow cable to the changer on this car also does telephone etc.

Iirc you could get an adaptor from the optic to run a std changer but i stole the magazine from wifes car and so far mine has been okayish with only the odd glitch.

this is getting tricky!

Initially i thought i didn't have the fibre optic cable...but i've just had a look (11:30pm in flip flops and underpants!).. the cable is rather stiff in fibre opticy kind of way, it's connected to a kenwood kdc c469 - which according to the blurb has connectivity to fibreoptic cable. I've been reading up on command and from what i gather (correct me if i'm wrong) the command can only connect to a changer using fibre optic.

If this is the case - and i do have a fibre optic connection in the boot - i'm very tempted to get the denison 500 and have oodles of songs etc and no disks..just the maps disk in the command unit itself.

any ideas guys on how i can be totally sure it's a fibre optic lead?

ps how does the denison get power?

To test the fiber optic lead,,just unplug it from the changer and turn on,,one LED in the optic cable will be lit and one led in the changer will be lit

bugger!
it has no leds or light of any sort.
just a round plug with many pins - a bit like an old mouse connector.

i suppose i could run a fibre optic lead from the command to the glove box? - although i'd ideally like the glove box for storage. or save a few quid and keep a wallet of copied disks in the car :-(

if you buy a dension they come with the fibre optic leads in the kit you just need to pick up a live and earth off the radio the fibre optics do the rest, the kenwood would have had a interface somewhere near the rear of the radio from what i can remember from the last one i fitted the fibre optic leads are less than a foot long that come with the interface but the other end of the changer lead will be plugged in to it
