W210 brake vacuum pump

I've experienced intermittent loss of power assistance to the brakes of my 2000 E320cdi estate. My local indie replaced master cylinder and then servo unit but problem persists and I'm down nearly £800. They now say it is the vacuum pump which will cost either £700 or £1,000 depending on which model it is - can't tell until old one removed. Anyone had similar problems or know of a cheaper source for these parts. Peter.

Hi Peter, If you're local indie is any good he should be able to check the operation of your vacuum pump without just replacing it!. You get a hand operated pump with a gauge and T piece it into the line coming from the vacuum pump. As you increase engine speed you should see the indicated vacuum increasing.

Thanks for the reply - he says he has tested and it appears to be working OK. However, replacement is the only next step he can suggest. Anyone come across this fault before?

There was a problem in some of the one-way valves that are part of the servo pipe from the pump to the brake servo. I can't remember exactly what but somebody reading this might have their memory jogged. If not, it's a much cheaper "try" than a new servo!
