Just a note to say thanks to all the "posters" who gave me the confidence to have a go.. I have just changed pads and discs allround on my E320 CDI (Dec51) and to be frank it was an easy job and I was done and dusted in under 3 hours.

The parts were all from Europarts in Redhill and at under £200 for a job the stealer said would come in at £550/£600 I am delighted.........Thanks

This is where the forum is at its best, not everyone has the confidence or the ability to do it themselves and there are other reasons.

Thanks for posting back and you did it in a good time. The money you saved is a weeks wages for some folk down here.

Discs and pads

I have just checked the total bill and it was £177 for the discs and pads allround........I am going to replace the glow plugs this weekend and have just invested £14.99 in a set of Torx sockets from Halfords, I also spoke to the Stealer and am being told that I shouldn't have to remove the inlet manifold to do the job as long as I have a jointed socket......the 6 glow plugs came in at £52 a little cheaper than the Merc ones....fingies crossed then !!

Hi Marc
Have just registered today and I need some advice as to how to change the front discs on my 1998 e240. As you have just done yours can you give me some information.
Thanks

Just a point to watch out for when trying to remove the discs.

I have just attempted to remove the front discs on my W210, as follows:

1. Remove pads & caliper.
2. Remove small screw locating disc onto hub.
3. Stop and think about it........

I tried to remove the disc by tapping around the hub to loosen things up, then striking the disc from behind to dislodge it, rotate 180 degr. do the same then repeating from different points & rotating 180 degr. This should have gradually eased it off, but in fact did nothing. After bashing away for some time I reassembled with the new pads as I couldn't budge it......

In hindsight it would have been easier to undo the bearing retaining nut and withdraw the hub (with bearing for inspection and regreasing) along with the disc, from the axle.

What I did manage to do was to knock the tracking out (was worried that I may have damaged the disc also but it looked fine on inspection & works fine). Just need to try again, either using a press or a much larger hammer, but on the bench instead of the car.

Hope this is useful advice.

The new freezing sprays work well, in this case you spray the center bearing holder, and not the disc.

When doing this always lower the suspension onto a Axel stand, this takes the bounce out of it when hitting with a hammer

Just replaced mine and they were a pig to get off. But after a liberal dosing of Release fluid giving it 5 minutes to soak then whilst continually turning the disc "rapid tapping" (avoid loosing your temper and thumping them) with a short 2lb lump hammer they came off. After and before fitting the new disc's I cleaned the area with "Contractors Solvent" from Screwfix to remove all traces of the release fluid.
