Hi Gang,
My E200 W210 is mis-behaving in the hot weather, no problems on colder days, so ok 99% of the year in Scotland then! The coolant warning light
comes on when warmed up on a hot day and in standing traffic. The coolant level is fine, and according to the handbook the other probable cause is that the cooling fan has failed. I don't hear it coming on. A quick run of the heater fan soon cools it back down, and when running along it's fine. Any tips on diagnosis or where the fault might be? Doesn't seem to be a separate fuse for the cooling fan circuit, so it must be linked to something else. Similar posts in the past indicate that using the A/C should force the cooling fan on. Is that a reliable check?

Thanks for any help, always appreciated!

W210 has electric fan, it looks like yours is not working. With the car cold is the fan free to move? Again with the car cold check all the contectors to the fan. You could also disconnect the fan and apply a 12v feed to it to check if it will spin up.

Thanks Blobcat,
The fan is actually working correctly, coolant is flowing well and at the right level. Looks like a dodgy sensor. It has once come on at 40degC!

I'll clean it up, but for now I'll leave it alone and watch the temperature gauge, just like to good old days before computerised nonsense makes it over complex.

hi
hope everyone is enjoying the heat wave
Just on that topic, I was wondering about how high temp guage should go??
Driving in city, my car temperature goes over 80C mark. Under normal conditions it sticks to 80C, but these days it crosses the 80C mark and goes just under 100C. however, on motorway it comes down again!!! is it normal ?!
Thanks

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Normal driving for me is slightly under 90 (midway point?), but slow driving today saw more like 100, and stop-start idling it was edging towards 110!

The needle was moving errantly, so I put the heating on full blast and within 30 seconds it was back down to around 100.

Hi,
I guess the temperature will depend to a point on the engine size. For my E200, never much above 80-82 in normal running, can climb to 90 when idling in traffic.

just want to give this a quick bump. My fan doesnt work either and i have disconnected the lead to the fan and put a car battery straight up to it without any joy. Would i be right in saying that the aircon fan and the other one are connected someway by a belt? I dont think there are two seperate motors. Any suggestions i.e. source for parts and fitting guide....thanks

The 210 has a visco fan and the chances are is that the visco is bad, do a carrot test and see if it will chop a carrot once up to 85c, you can hear the click as the fan cuts in to full power'
