hi Guys

i've got a sligh wine comming from the differential and have been told i'd be better off getting a 2nd hand one and putting it in , so my question is this as simple as unbolting the old one and bolting in the new one. Also can any one tell me how to check the auto gear box oil i have the merc dip stick but am unsure if its done with the engine running of just warmed up and then switched off.

Thanks

Better off finding a reconditioner, I had my CL diff done for £500, if you need a diff you could pay that for a second hand one.

easy enough to remove, heavy to refit, easy if the cars on a ramp, gearbox oil needs checking with engine running, yours I think wont come with a dip stick so dont assume you need some and just add a little, over filling the autobox can damage them.

You might also consider a failing prop center bearing!!!

To check the atf level drive the car for 15-20 minutes, preferably on the motorway (idling won't work), and park up on level ground. Leave the engine running, remove the dipstick plug (back of the engine bay) and insert the dipstick.

Make sure the dipstick is nice and clean, no bits of lint or anything. When warm, the level should be between the 2 top marks (80'c IIRC).

Check you have the right dipstick, it should say 722.6 on the red handle - presuming you have a 722.6 gearbox that is. Older ones have a 722.4 IIRC.

Cant find anyone that will work on diff's over here (here being ireland) Can get a 2nd hand one for 300 euro and if its just a bolt out bolt in job thats great. as for the gear box i got the dip stick from Merc and had a so call merc spec change the oil and he over filled it by 1 liter and was driven for about 50 miles befor it was drained and refiled correctly but he didn't change the filter or the TC. so i ordered the ATF, filter and seal from merc along with the dip and will be changing it soon. i'll check that center bearing befor i go and get the diff. n

Cheers

Hi Mick,

I am based in Co. Wexford and have a diff problem on a 2001 E220.

Did you manage to source a refurbished unit ? I need to find one myself and would be interested if you sourced in the UK or Ireland.

Cheers

Its unusual to find noisy diffs on MBs, a faulty diff will whine when pulling say at 30 mph up, and be quiet on the overrun, when you take your foot off the throttle
