Hi,

The rear OSR door lock on my E300 estate has failed and I've got a replacement for it.

However, for the life of me can I remove the old one (the inner door panel is off and all the screws removed). It seems as though I need to remove the outer door handle to enable the inner plastic "back plate" to come out, which will then allow the old lock to slide out. Sadly, I'm struggling to work out how to take the door handle off!

Can anyone give me a steer on the steps needed to replace the lock, and whether or not the handle does need to be removed to get the lock out. Even help on removing the handle would help.

Thanks.

Hi Malcolm,

Thanks for the reply and welcome note.

Apologies - I wasn't too clear in my post as it is the OSR passenger door that I'm trying to sort not the tailgate. If you've a similar diagram for the door that would be most helpful.

Cheers,
Dave

Malcolm,

That's a great help.

On the handle front it is the hidden screw under the rubber trim that I was missing. However, now I've found it I'm unable to remove it, as the screw is of a type I've not come across before. The head itself is circular, with a central circular hole and a pin in the middle (where I assume the removal tool is inserted) - any idea of what kind tool I'll need to get to remove that?

As an aside the lock iteself is secured to the door using standard torx screws, so it's a bitt annoying why a different screw type is used to hold the handle on with.

Cheers,
Dave

This is known as a security Torx screw, they are chaap to buy from any tool shop or Halfords, the have a hole in the center for the pin

Well I've got there in the end!

This is probably a hour long job at most once you know what you're doing. If you've to change a rear door lock on a W210 follow the following steps and you shouldn't go too fare wrong.

Lock - I went on http://www.partsgateway.co.uk and got a used lock from Dronsfields Mercedes for £33.50, including next day delivery, which is in excellent condition.

1. Remove the inner door panel - there's a very good description on this site already, but just in case (working from inside): (i) remove the trim from behind the chrome door lever and remove the screw from underneath, (ii) remove the plastic "plug" from below the door handle/arm rest and then remove the screw that is then exposed, (iii) remove the screw and trim surrounding the door lock, (iv) gently prise out the window control and disconnect the cable, and finally (v) using a flat knife or the correct tool gently lever the door panel from the door.

2. Facing the edge of the door remove the rubber trim from near the door lock, and if you shine a torch through the small hole that is then exposed you will see a screw that needs to be removed. This requires a long H4 tool to remove - note this is not a security torx as I first thought (there isn't a pin in the centre, it must have been a trick of the light!).

3. The rear of the outer door handle (the small section not the handle itself) can not be removed by sliding backwards.

4. The door handle itself can now be removed by sliding backwards.

5. Three philips screws are now visible, remove and the rear handle "plate" can be removed from inside of the door panel.

6. Disconnect the rod (with the green plug -can gently lever out), the cable, and the vacuum pipe (yellow - don't cut this can gently be levered out).

7. Unscrew the 3 torx screws that secure the lock and it easy to lower and remove from inside of the door panel.

8. Installation is the exact reverse of the above steps.

Good luck & many thanks to Malcolm for the diagram, which without which I would never have sorted this one out.

Cheers,
Dave

I forgot to say that in step (2) it may not be necessary to remove the screw completely, as I did. The reason to suggest this is because I managed to drop the screw when removing it, and it fell into the bottom of the door and got wedged under a strenghtening section of the inner door, and took ages to get out. The screw is about an inch long and I guess a couple of turns should be enough to release the small/rear section of the outer handle.

Removing Front Passenger Door Panel 2002 C Class Estate - Help

Hi Folks,

I am new to this forum and have been looking for some help in the existing threads and this is as close as i have got. I need to replace the Central Locking Mechanism on the Passenger side of my 2002 C Class Estate. I have purchased the part from Merc (£65), and those kinds folks there assured me it's a simple job!!! Has anyone removed the inside door panel, looking at the part its instillation looks straight forward enough, i just dont fancy taking on removing the inner door panel without some assistance.

Any help greatly appreciated.

When removing the door panels its worth getting the special V shaped tool the removes the bottom plastic clips without damage to the the door card.

about £4 from shops and Halfords
