W210 E-class transmission problem

When changing from Drive to Reverse/Park the selector will not allow then to be selected if teh brake is pressed. If I take my foot off the brake pedal it will allow Rev or park to be selected. Also the tiptronic will not work at all, however I can live with that. Anyone have any ideas?

Brake light switch? Can be responsible for all manner of problems, cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Thanks Ernieh, but the brake lights seem to work OK, perhaps it is double pole?
