Been in to franchised dealer for an A service at 59k miles. By the time they'd done the all the filters, plugs, 8 ltrs of synthetic, one ball joint and the inveitable brake light switch, I'm £900 lighter. At which point they "recommend" new discs and pads, based on them being 80% gone. Clearly I'd like to do this, as I wish to live, but don't want to pay the £800 odd quoted.
Advice please on indpendents in the Bristol / South Wales areas, and cost experiences if you have any; also hints and tips if I do it myself (done all disc Mondeo's before), as there's no Haynes manual yet.

The Haynes C-class manual covers this as there are many shared parts.
An easy job and cheap parts from the likes of GSF,Eurocarparts and kmsparts.com

Just as easy as the Mondeo. New caliper bolts though to refit (85 lbs/ft). Clean out the old 'loctite' compound from the boltholes. Also remember to smear the mounting faces of your alloys with copper grease before refitting.
DIY and save yourself a small fortune!

ATE discs from Euro Car Parts approx. £40 pair, pads £28. +VAT.

Sorted!

Many thanks for all your recs guys. Shopped around a bit and reckon I'll struggle to get OE or good aftermarket bits for much less than 200 quid. Got a few quotes from locals and indie specialists and ended up with 334 quid all in from a specialist in south wales - using OE parts. Best of all its being done on Monday!! Will post feedback to let any locals know recommendations for use

You are right, I slip mine off to respray them now and again as I hate rusty disc centers.

Those are cheapo though, the front pads I got from ECP were £35. Better not to skimp on parts, when you're talking about brakes.

Guttmann are German they work fine on my 286BHP BMW 740i.
ATE front pads are £30.23.
If the sensor wire is worn add £3.50 !

I concur! Some have and some don't - I just happen to be one of the latter (but happy, and glad for those who 'have'!)
It would break my heart (and the bank) if I had to spend more than £100 to fit pads and discs. Thank goodness mine is an old motor, I'd hate to keep paying through the nose for labour/parts from MB just to keep up a very, very expensive warranty!
I must admit though, I use ATE brake parts rather than Guttman, because of years of good experience of ATE stuff. Hadn't heard of Guttman before.

I take your point - thinking about it, I guess I must have had a few other bits done at the same time. Can't seem to find the old bills now so I can't check.

Adam, I go along with Parrot - Guttmann are cheapies. I had a mix (accidentally) of Guttman and ATE from ECP many moons ago and the Guttmann was not as good quality as the ATE disc. I took the time to check everthing and the ATE was absolutely spot on.

Gott in Himmell! Got a few nerves jangling on that one! Don't disagree with Parrot of Doom, but I don't have much spare time (kids for weekends, wedding planning etc, etc), so on a personal basis the value of paying someone about 25% of what the stealer wants for labour, and slightly less for the bits too makes sense for me (I have visions of searching the garage floor for a spring clips as it flies off!!). I also want to keep it on OE bits until the tinworm has been attended to under warranty (imminent), as I don't want any slippery excuses. Discs shouldn't need doing again while I have the car, and pads I will certainly do myself in future.

Anyhow, I promised feedback on the indie I used, and my view was good. Quick, courteous (could teach the dealers a thing), a mine of useful advice on other bits. So if you live in or near South Wales, Stuttgart Garage in Pontypridd gets a thumbs up. Find em on the web at www.stuttgartgarage.co.uk

Language Adrian!!

I wouldn't count on not doing the discs. It's not unusual these days to do a regular pad/disc change. Keep an eye on the disc thickness.

Well it depends on the age of your car of course deciding how much to spend, someone with a late car is not going to fit them...the daily depreciation of the car is more! The Guttmman pads are good they come with a sachet of permatex anti-sqeek compound too.
In general the likes of Textar and ATE have more pad formulations rather than just a few to cover many models.
Textar can be a good choice if your brakes are harsh or noisy as they tend to have softer compounds although MB in fact are already good in that respect as the standard spec for pads is soft compared with other makes IMO.
Pagid are another OE supplier...I found them on my BMW.
Modern vented disks tend not to go out of true, people often mistake shaking under braking as disc or pad related in fact it's often a worn bush for example on a BMW the upper thrust control arm bushes wear.

The other variable of course is the driver,I often follow cars where the driver brakes on and off the whole time whilst I've not touched mine at all by looking further ahead and anticipation.Carry speed into corners rather than braking sharply beforehand etc. A fast driver tends to be a smooth one.

You are so right in what you say, I follow people sometimes, brake, brake and I get pleasure in seing how far I can go without touching mine, and I do not hang around. I have not used my horn to the point that when I tried to get a friends attention it made a spluttering sound, so I found a lane where I could blow it clean.
