I am hoping that someone can help me a diagnose the following problem with the digital climate control on my 1999 E240.
What works correctly. If the outside temperature is modest (<20C, say), I tend to disconnect the a/c compressor via the EC button (apart from an occasional 10-20 minutes to keep the a/c system lubricated or to demist the screen). Without the compressor, internal temperature then matches the display automatically, unless I set an internal temperature lower than the external temperature, when the fan speeds up. So far so good.
The problem. I can't normally achieve a comfortable internal temperature, if the outside temperature is warm (>20C, say). With the a/c compressor engaged, one of two things happens. Sometimes the internal temperature settles about 3C cooler than before the compressor was engaged (so I have to oscillate between settings of 20C in EC mode and 23C using the compressor). However, most frequently the internal temperature simply continues to fall, even on a journey lasting 60+ minutes, until it is vaguely icy inside. The only reliable exception to this is that, if the heating is set to "HI" or defrost, very warm air is produced even while the compressor is engaged.
The effect does not seem to be limited to the left or right hand side.
Any ideas?
Alex
