W210 E300TD - Intermittent Electric Window Opening & Closing Fault

I've seen countless window problems - but none quite like this - I thought I would give it a go.....

A small niggle with my car - but extremely annoying. Every so often, in fact nearly almost every journey, one or more of the windows just stops operating. It doesn't matter whether it is open or closed - but after a a period of time (particularly in 1 hour + journeys) - they just stop functioning. It is of course most annoying if they stop operating when they are open!!!

The cure it would appear is simply to stop, and shut off the engine, remove the key and restart - this will then result in all of the windows becoming fully functioning again until the next time......

Therefore - at the moment, it's not a serious problem, but certainly one I would like to fix at some point - it's not always possible to pull over and restart the car on the motorway!

Once restarted - all the windows are fully operational, and open and close in the normal way. I've yet to identify what may be causing the problem - there doesn't appear to be any ryhme or reason to it that I can see........

It is going in for a fault code diagnostic next - so I can see what other problems MB can find with this lemon - hopefully, there might be a cure there - but if anyone has heard of this before - I should be extremely grateful.

To let anyone who looked at this know, that the sole cause of all of my electrical problems was indeed the voltage regulator, which I have now replaced, and everything is working reliably now - still can't cure my gearbox thump though....

Malcolm,Have just returned from Spain.Left Southern Andalucia on Monday morning, crossed Pyrenees on Tuesday morning, spent night near Chateroux and caught Channel Tunnel train last night.Stayed in Surrey with Aunt and arrived back on the Wirral early this afternoon.
Car (W210 AUTO EST 220 CDI 69,000 miles) ran perfectly returning over 50mpg BUT I noticed a perceptible and recurring clunk from the auto box when it changed down to (I think second).Otherwise the auto box was perfect.
Any ideas as to what`s wrong as it is due a service in 2,800 miles.
Regards
John
