Hi all my newly acquired E300 has covered 270k miles and is still going great.
Couple of problems though, bit of top end rattle and reading else where this could be injector or lifter,I've pulled the cams out and a few of the lifters to seem to have some movement in them,is this normal or not.
Also the auto box changes a little harshly after braking then powering on again.I;ve read another post saying this could be the speed sensor in the box,is this easy to change with the box in situ?
Thanks in advance for any advice

With 270k on the clock and the box being original I would suspect it is worn causing the harsh change. New atf maybe in order but an box overhaul would be better.

The knock may have been diesel knock not a mechanical knock.

auto box

Yes you are probably right about the box,you did mention this speed sensor in an earlier post though, the ATF was changed 3k ago which made little difference.
When you say deisel knock do you mean an injector knocking or combustion knock?
Thanks again

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Well I've read about these engines getting to 400,000 miles without issue so a million should be achieveable :D The gearbox will probably go long before that!

Diesel Knock?

Hi,

Im completely new to the E300Td. Can anyone let me know if its normal that the engine revs sounds like unadjusted tappy noise between 600-1000rpm (under no load). This goes away after and isn't too loud.

Many thanks,

Car is 1998 with only120K

Regards,
Andrew

Could be fuelling. There's a similar thread on here, the owner thought it was tappets, but after putting 25% veg oil/diesel mix it quietened down. I guess the veg oil cleaned out the pipes and injectors.

Placing a screwdriver on the fuel lines will give you an idea whether it is a fuelling thing.
