Anyone know how to drain torque converter on 51 plate e320cdi ?
Have removed sump and filter, but Im led to beleive there is no drain plug for torque converter, so any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
You disconnect the cooler pipes at the front of the engine and pump the old fluid out.

Some people say you can do that and run the engine until most of it is out - I can't see why not, so long as you're careful. Other people will no doubt chip in, I'm a complete amateur tbh :)

On my car, the transmission oil cooler is a plate type heat exchanger next to the oil filter and not a seperate radiator at the front of the car

Assuming your car is a Mercedes Diesel.......The description you have given of a 'plate type heat exchanger next to the oil cooler' is actually the diesel fuel 'return-line cooler' .......NOT the tranny oil cooler.

The transmission oil cooler is not a separate unit on a 320CDI, it is built into the radiator but as a separate compartment.

Thanks everyone,... Gettting a little sidetracked! ....Firstly Thanks Mr Doom, its your DIY ATF change posting that got me this far, so would you know which pipes those are to disconnect and the procedure please? ...and I wonder Mr Sonic, or may I call you pan?, Do you know which type of tranny cooler I would have? and my fluid was well "cooked", very dark, pan magnet only had the flour type metal particals on it and not much of that, I was pleased to see only that at this milage,I guess not been done before! (200k), no record in service book, So would you advise "flushing" or maybe change again in near futre as way of flushing old oil? , not that I want to spend another 100+ but just for peace of mind.
Thanks again everyone....what did we do before the Internet?

But the pipes from the transmission go to the cooler!! The fuel cooler is underneath the rear of the car. Car is 2001 E320 CDi. If I can find the relavent section on the Russian site, I will post it

How do you flush the TC? Is it possible to do this as a DIY without a pump. I drained my the ATF W203 while changing the radiator. However, I did not get much fluid from the pipes that go to the cooler. Does the TC retain ATF even when the pipes are disconnected?

On Russian Web Page go to 210.026, then go to 27.7226 Auto tramsmission, then last item (attached parts) 4th drawing down is the transmission oil cooler with the lines to/from gearbox

Thanks. I located the lines and disconnected when I changed the rad. Only trouble was they did not appear to drain much fluid and I'm assuming some stayed in the TC.

Stop the engine from firing and spin it on the starter motor and it will all come out,, or I dont see why the car could not just be started on idle for a few secs

Sorry, my mistake........i wrongly assumed the layout would be similar to my 270CDI. :???:

As television above, letting the engine idle for a few seconds should push a little more oil out of the lines.

Hello Panosonic,, this info was put out by Ian walker and his info is quite good,,I had a chat with him about pumping it out,, and this was the result,, he has done this twice now.

I know others that if the TC holds 3 liters then was the box has drained they put 3 liters in and that pushes out the old 3 liters.

It must be best do do it anyway otherwise its only a 55% change in fluid

No problem, it had me baffled for a while as I kept looking for the lines to the radiator, then I found that drawing

Just to add that knowledge is power,, the chances are that if you have no dip stick, then you do not have a drain plug
