Hi all. I was driving home today after some errands. A few hundred yards from my home I noticed a diesel smell. After getting home I investigated and saw that the back of my engine was absolutely soaked in diesel. I removed the engine cover and saw that the fuel return hose had dislodged itself from injector number 5 See photo.

I have the following questions:

Can I just push the hose back on the nipple on injector, or is it likely it will dislodge its-self again? If so could I use a small hose clamp to secure it?

Also:

How do I best clean the diesel spill on the back of the engine / get rid of the diesel stink? Could I use a pressure washer? A degreaser? If so what product?

Please let me know.

Looks like the plastic barb has broken off to me. You’ll find them on eBay

just go to your merc dealer, show them what you need and ask them to order a new one, no issues with fitting or delays in postage from Lithuania..

Get some tissue roll in there to wipe up all the excess diesel, I wouldnt jet wash as there are lots of electrical connections and you dont want diesel splashing on the belt, the diesel will clean all the gunk so you will have a shiny engine,

may be a good time to replace the rubber pipes too, just check the ends to see if the rubbers are going brittle.

Nice days job there, pity about the weather....

As Uncle Benz suggested, you can buy the connectors separately. I decided however in the end to go belt and braces and ordered the whole system (with brass T connectors ). My thinking is that if one connector fails without any apparent reason the others my fails also. The car is 20 years old and the plastic may have become brittle. The brass fittings should be good for at least another 100 years! ;)

I meant "may fail also". Thanks to all of you for your advice.

Bit late but that's what I was going to suggest. I went a step further as the pipes weren't great and replaced them with rubber ones which came as a kit

Well done replacing it with one with brass joiners. I had the same problem with a w210 cdi I had a few years ago. I bought a 2nd hand standard rail at the time as it was next day delivery. Fortunately nothing broke again but I always thought the plastic T pieces seemed very brittle and a likely point of failure.

I managed to break another connector whilst disconnecting the hose. I guess the plastic had become brittle over time.
