I juts got back from holiday to find that my 1996 E320 has developed a slight misfire:( . After running the car, there is a very obvious smell of Hydrogen Sulphide. So, I have deduced that the CATs must have gone.

Does anyone know where I can have them rebuilt, or buy replacements at reasonable money? GSF and Euro Car Parts do not list them...

Thanks in advance.

why not pop in to a MOT station and have the content read first, there are many things besides the cat.MAF for instance

Cats

Nationwide cats supply them for your car, pretty reasonable as well.

Do consider though that they will not last as long as the genuine item.

I have just had to purchase the offside cat for my E55 from MB as you can not buy them anywhere else, £1800 per side (feeling quite ill)

Cat's don't just fail like that.

Something else is causing the problem, a thorough check of ignition and emissions equipment is needed. Otherwise, you will be wasting your money on new cats.

Are you sure the smell is not the result of the cat working? I seem to remember when cats were first around that many cars would have a distinct rotten eggs smell, though must admit I have not noticed that for some years now.

Could be completely wrong here - just assumed that the unpleasant odour was because of the cat.

Anyway, getting it tested before replacing it would seem sound advice give the hundreds of pounds it costs to replace one.

Replacement Cats

Diablo,

I've just read your thread. It coincided with me looking at cats for my replacement exhaust system (500E). I spent some time last night looking at cats through Google on the american web sites. Were they cheap or what???. When I finally make up my mind to redo the exhaust I will certainly source the cats direct from the US. Even if you convert US$ straight to GB£ to account for taxes, postage and VAT they are still the best cost and the ones I was looking at gave 2yrs warranty on the core and 5yrs on the casing, which is better than any UK supplier. Shipping should be almost as quick as UK mail order.

I'd get the cats checked first before even thinking about ordering new ones.

I had a faulty alternator on on old MkIII Golf which overcharged the battery, causing a nasty smell of rotten eggs as the battery boiled, so it could quite easily be something other (and considerably cheaper to fix) than a faulty Cat.

Cheers,
Duncan

Thanks in advance.

I recently had a similar problem; turned out it was a combination of the MAF failing plus two dodgy HT leads and one faulty coil pack.

Misfire now gone and egg stink too.

My advice; get it checked out because the ingition problems were sending unbunrt fuel into the cat and unchecked would have taken it (them?) out too

Angus,

You, and several others, were spot on. It was nothing to do with the cats. One of the coils had gone down. This was replaced, and now all is well. The bad smell has gone, too.

Thanks for all the advice.
