I have one of the late W210 E320 models, and recently the temp gauge has been doing some funny things. I have changed the water temp sender and the thermostat, and this seems to have solved the problem. But I have noticed that in traffic the gauge now moves up to just below the 3 quarter mark, where the electric fan cuts in, then once moving again the temp drops back to normal.
Is this correct, I don't remember this happening before? Is there a problem with the switch controlling the fan, is it in fact a different switch from the water temp sender next to the thermostat, if so where is it?
I sat on the M25 for 1.5 hours yesterday with the external temp showing 26.5, and the temp sat solidly at the just below three quarters until we moved and then it dropped, I just don’t know if this is normal, and wondered if I could make the fan cut in earlier?
I have played with the fan off and on the car, and have discovered that when the temp reaches just below three quarters on the gauge the fan cuts in, but it isn't running flat out, its only running enough to stop the temp rising, not enough to cool it down. I assume that if it gets hotter the fan speed rises????
If you run the fan directly from a battery it is capable of running considerably faster.
So how is the speed controlled by the car, is there some way of over-riding this so the fan runs faster, cools the car down then switches off?
Thanks,
Martin
