Dear All

I am hoping someone can pinpoint to the correct answer. I have a e220 Cdi which runs well. I need to get a new mass air filter but today when i was driving home i had issues with the cars road handling.

1: When moving off the car ESP light was coming off and the car was unstable on the road. Like it was slipping. Car stablises and ESP warning triangle goes off.

2: When going road a bend i put my foot down and the car lost it the ESP light came on i slowed right down and corrected the car. Scared the crap out of me as my daughter was in the car with me.

When i move the car from a stop position slowly ,no ESP light comes on the car is fine. Its similiar to when you have no grip and the car moves left and right quickly. When i move quickly the car is unstable and ESP light blinks on and off till it stablises itself.

Any pointer will be greatly appreciated. I am hoping its something simple like the tyres

Thank you in advance

My tyres look fine but i am just off to get a friend to check them.

Did you release the parking brake?

The ESP light comes on if the rear wheels are spinning at different rev.

Did you disable the ESP accidently? or the switch is malfunction.

low tyre pressure?
oily road?

afterall the esp only comes on after the slip, not cause the loss of traction

Other thought severly warped disc, but you would feel that as you roll along , not under power

Were you driving in the rain and the tyres are not so good.

The ESP controls and helps to correct the car should it break away on a bend, the ESP light may flash up when this is going on.

Your car has a kind of pendulum mounted on the front axle, if the car suddenly slides the ESP kicks in via the BAS and controls the slew rate, braking each wheel in turn to correct the slide.

If you are in doubt about the system, the drop in to an indie or MB dealer and ask them to check for any ESP / BAS malfuncions and fault codes

Thank you everyone for your quick response really appreciated.

I have had my tyres checked by a friend as i have no clue he could not see any issues with them mind you it is dark. I will get this properly looked at tommorow.

I could not replicate the issue now. Early on today had the car ESP light come on and off over a 2 mile journey. Now drove around for 3 miles no issue.

I did release the parking break. I did check if i did not take the ESP off. The tyre pressure i shall get checked tommorow. I have the car booked in at indie to get the mass air filter changed and i will get ESP/BAS diagnosed for any faults

The car has brand new brakes and disc's. All 4 of them had this changed 2 months ago.

I was driving on a wet road when i had the issue early. It was like when you drive on leaves and you have no proper grip.

regards

If this only happened on one stretch of road its possible there was an oil spill and the road was slippery

Xtractorfan,

It was over approx 2 mile journey. When not pushing the throttle hard the car was fine. So slow pickup was ok. But sometimes when I stopped the car put my foot down it started to slip. I was not aggressively accelerating.

The strange thing is I drove it later on I could not replicate the issue.
