Just had my 1999 E240 "A" serviced at the local dealer. £195 for the service and about £140 for replacement of the 12 spark plugs. Is this too expensive? Had it done at the dealer because it's still under the Signature warranty.

They also recommeded that I get the "filters" changed for £150. Apart from the obvious, oil filter (changed during the service) and the air filter, what other filters are fitted and can they be easily changed?

They also recommeded changing the coolant for £50.

... fuel filter (£7 approx from MB), easy to change;
auto-transmission oil filter (£25 approx from MB), difficult to change;
Air-con pollen filter (£20 approx from MB), easy to change;

as well as the air filter (x2) that you mentioned (v. easy to change)
and the oil filter.

Check how many of these they have actually changed. The transmission may be a "lifetime fill" type (on newer cars) and hence not require an oil or filter change ever.

Hi Guys

At that price I think they are talking about the A/C charcole filters they are very expensive to buy but easy to change. because of the cost customer's in the uK don't bother but they should realy be done.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Next service I will look around to compare with another dealer or an independent. This time I had to get it serviced at a main dealer because it's under Signature warranty.

Gosh, so many filters. Arnie, where's the 2nd air filter, A/C pollen filter and fuel filter?

Hi,

if it's a V6 then there's an airfilter for each bank of cylinders, hence, 2.

The polen filter is the same as the charcoal filter and is somewhere on the air intake for the airconsystem, near or on the rear engine bulkhead.

The fuel filter is usually a cylindrical capsule mounted somewhere on the left-hand side (nearside) of the engine bay, possibly attached to the longitudinal chassis member.

I don't know the exact details for the E240, I'm afraid.

sorry u are miles off there :shock:

and £140 for the plugs is a bargain

12x plugs £6 ish each

and approx 2.5 hours labour @ £70 ish

what a bargain u got there sir

infact not even close lol

a fuel filter is more like £60 ish plus vat and .5 labour to change at the back of the car on the near side

just because it is a v6 doesnt meen it has 2 air filters

the pollen filter is under the nearside of the dash

so in all sounds quite cheap
