Hi all, I have a 1997 W210 with 80k on the clock. It's developed a very occasional clonk from the front... I cant determine which side but it's possibly the drivers side (right). It happens when on full lock, usually when reversing off my drive but it happened the other day under hard braking in forward direction. Any ideas anyone? It doesn't happen all the time and only one at speed... it's quite loud and disturbing. the only other thing to mention (probably unrelated) but there is very slight steering vibration at around 70mph (wheels have been balanced!)

Thanks, Tim.

I'm sure much more knowledgeable members than me will be along soon but in the meantime,
front end clonk could be ARB bushes, drop links or ball joint.

Don't think i've forgotten anything:D

As Chris above, the drop links are the cheapest place to start, and common as muck!!!

ball joints are also common on 210s. i think mine needs one, its starting to knock and the steering sometimes feels stiffer than normal

As already said ARB drop links and/or lower wishbone ball joint.
All are relatively cheap parts to replace. My car gets through a lower ball joint about once every 18 months!

There are DIY threads on replacing them, with a list of all parts, prices and tools required.

A bit late in reply but the front wheel bearings adjust easily and sometimes knock

W210 discs and pads

I have just changed the front discs and pads on my e class and i feel the pedal is a bit spongey and there is alot of travel on the pedal, the brakes seem to work fine but you have to push down further on the pedal or even pump it to get a firm feeling under your foot.
Any ideas ??????

This almost sounds like the master cylinder has failed, it is a tandem device with separate front and rear pistons.
