R230...about to purchase will update shortly
Hi folks, I think Im approaching front brake pad change time. When I bought the car 30 months ago it had just had new discs and pads, and now 30K later, Im expecting the warning light to come on any day now.. Is a pad change a straightforward job? last time I did one was on a Mk1 V6 Mondeo!

Any recommendations on pad choice greatly appreciated also :).. one from GSF or MB original? Plus any 'dont (or indeed, do)do that' tips

Cheers

Thanks Malcolm, one query though, that diagram seems to show two sets of calipers - I think mine are like the top set.. hence no pin 26.. or am I misreading it ;)

Cheers

Only ever seen the top caliper (5) on the 210,s which have 2 7mm allen key bolts behind the plastic caps. And the shaped spring on the front.

Thanks Ellsy,, the forum running sl slow is off putting,,if thats the case you take out the 2 7mm screws and lift the caliper of,,do have some thing the right height it on as it must not hang on the hose

Aha, sounds similar to my old mondeo.. found my 7mm allen socket today, and used to have to tie up the caliper with string to keep the hose from stretching. Pushing the piston back in was normally the most hassle of the whole exercise!

Without a clamp, as the pads are U/S just use a very big screwdriver and lever them back before you take them off,,you cant hurt the disc, you could undo the bleed nipple to stop forcing fluid into the ABS pump

Aha!, thanks for the tips re the bleed nipple, I used to just undo the fluid reservoir cap and let the fluid go back up the pipes, but probably best not to.
I have previously used a g-cramp to force the piston back, but will check out what works best :)

Hi

G Cramp is the way to go. Be careful with the bleed nipple!!! They can shear!

Clean the rust off the sliders that the pads move on, i usually use a file and then lightly smear with copper grease. Nothing special about the pads on the 210.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I've just raised my W210 E220 and realised that the brakes don't look like any other car's that I've changed. Would somebody please point to the bolts that you are talking about on the following diagram (the link in the first reply doesn't work).

http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/ca...8a9a0a0ae99a799aceee1f6bf91acaa9db0a7adaee3d5

and if you have the time, a quick run through of the procedure e.g. after removing the bolts, do I just knock the caliper off?

Thanks.

Just found the plastic covers to the allen bolts that Ellsy Tanners mentioned. They do hide them well.:)
