Not uncommon , there are some graphic pictures posted on the forum on this exact issue. Depending upon age and service history MB would be my first point of call and "Warranty" would the first word out of my mouth.

Here's the link to the thread with the pic's http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=5824&page=21&highlight=suspension+rust

Well my Ohh My Merc were great on this one

I Have a 97 e320 avant garde dropped it off at merc in Glasgow and the lovely peeple there took some pictures sent them to off To MB who came back and said they will cover it

So thats the front crossmember the suspension, balljoints, all done free of charge.

wonder if they will cover a new engine and a new body shell then i'd have a nice new merc :D

But Hats off to Merc in Glasgow they have yet to let me down

Excellent news, I doubt many manufacturers would be so accomodating with a 9 yr old car.

Thank goodness you are alive. Mercedes should put it right. Well aware of the problem. Try "rust" and "spring perches" on this and other websites devoted to Mercedes and you will find some alarming evidence of the problem. But Mercedes do often pay to put it all right. My Merc dealer -very helpful- says the odd thing is they will fix one but not another that is in every way similar. What perplexes many is why no recall for something that is life threatening.

Try this thread for lots of info on this problem and why it must be treated really seriously Benzworld.org - Mercedes Benz Discussion Forum > Mercedes-Benz Sedan Forums > W210 E Class » Rust Warning!!

And this thread says there has been a recall for this in Canada.
MBWorld.org Forums > Mercedes-Benz Sedans > E-Class (W210)
recall you should look for don't wait for letter in your mail box

Threads I've followed do not mention recall in UK or US. Odd???

I would recommend any owner of a 210 chassis to inspect and treat the underside of the car once a year as I do. I know in an ideal world this would not be necessary but we are still some way off metal treatments that are impervious to rust.

The job is quite easy to do;

1) Dismount each wheel in turn.
2) Visually inspect wheel arch and suspension components for corrosion and damage.
3) Apply waxoil by brush to all suspension linkage points and any other areas where rust is starting to show. It is always a good idea to treat the spring perch and suspension spring ends to stop rusting and eventual breakage.
4) Clean the wheelarch inner edge and waxoil, touch-up with paint on visible parts if required.
5) Thoroughly check tyres for damage and destone then remount.
6) If your really fussy like me check for any laquer damage on alloys and always remember to fit balancing weights on the inside rim.
7) For ultimate aesthetic effect make sure brake calipers and brake disc hubs are cleaned and painted with silver Hammerite Smoothrite.

I know it doesn't sound that appealing a job, but if you don't do it nobody else will, a garage unless instructed certainly won't.

It does provide a feel good factor when done, have fun.

Is that broken rusty bit off your car???
Other threads suggest very difficult to check spring perches even for experts.
But bet bet must be to get a dealer to check. Show them cyps problem and this thread if they want good reason why you want this safety check.

Glad to hear it. Just sad that on another thread a guy waited ages for a response, got nowhere and has now sold his Merc to go elsewhere. Seems to show how important the dealer is in all this.
