I'm intrested in buying E-class mb, so I wanted to know what is the most reliable and at the same time most fuel efficient engine on the highway on that model.

Also what should I look out for when buying one i.e. what are the common problems that I should be aware of? Thanks

W210 is a good car, but they did have serious rust problems. Mine had front wings replaced, rear wheel arches rebuilt, boot lid treated and resprayed twice, and only 5 years old at the time. All done under rust warranty, but you're unlikely to get that now (even though it was a 30 year warranty, there were lots of conditions on servicing etc.)
As above, the W211 is a nicer car, doesn't generally have the same rust issues, and unlikely to be a lot different in price, so I'd try to source one of those.

Hello and welcome

W210 E320CDI, rust is the issues you’ll be fighting constantly.

Mine averaged just over 36mpg for over 100k miles.

W211 is more modern although the first ones have SBC brakes which are overly complex and expensive.

I've driven a W211 320 CDI ****** gorgeous motor , can't remember the year , but remember the discolouration of headlight lenses and smart 5 spoke AMG alloys .

Oh yes, and for the actual subject, as Blobcat, E320 Cdi will give something in the region of 35mpg overall average, on a run In think the most I had was about 42mpg.

Due to the ageing problems of the 210 and finding a good one I’d be looking at 07-09 211s either 280cdi or 320cdi OM642 V6 diesel, if you want cheap and bullet proof a 211 E220cdi is the one to go for they will do stella miles if looked after

I had a `99 e300tds Did starship miles no problem. But as above , rust issues. I replaced the front wings myself. Front spring top mounts can break away. Early W211s have a brake system problem.

An equivalent 211 is probably cheaper these days. You find a rust-free 210 E320cdi estate and you'll be paying proper money for it

Nothing wrong with a 211 270, not as powerful as a 320 but I averaged 42mpg a month with a lot of city work, on a run I saw 50+ many times. SBC is a pain but a rebuilt pump isn’t expensive now, @JohnnySBC rebuilds them for a very low cost.

I had a CLK270CDI 2006 did 115K miles. Nothing mechanical failed, did about 48mpg.

270CDI has perhaps best 'power feeling / mpg' ratio, W210 has also available with OM612 but not in UK IIRC?
OM647 was dropped in W211 facelift.
W209 is good choice if slightly smaller interior is ok, but I think price it still higher than W210.

I did around 110k in mine averaging 46mpg a year I think, the water pump in mine did get replaced but that was only due it getting a bit noisy, other than that just typical wear and tear stuff

I was never a fan of the 612 for some reason, just didn’t quite have the sweet spot the 647 seemed to have had,

Reliability in inherintly linked to maintenace, so first see to that it has good maintenance recordes and be prepared to keep on top of it.
Although you dont state what E class you are after, or budget, this could give an idea for people to post a response.

To compare a petrol we have an E240 (2.6 V6 petrol) which on a motorway run will give 32mpg though I have seen 38mpg once when trying.
The V6 petrol engine is pretty much indestructible and very quiet and smooth.
