Hello, I have a 2001 W210 200K estate. I was driving along and the ABS warning come up on the muti function display. I pulled over and stopped the engine to see if when I restarted it it would be cleared the engine will not start. All electrics function OK and all lights come on dash but it will not start. I towed to my local garage and he checked it with a computer and the errors 44,64,38 came up in the memory indicating CAN signal errors from the break and gearbox. He managed to clear the error 44 but the others will not clear. Battery is fine and plenty of power.
Two points which not sure if relevant are:-
1, The service indicator is reading 14500 mile since service required ( it has been serviced but the indicator not reset)
2, The connector for the computer under the bonnet is a 38 pin and the manuals indicate pin 3 is +, There is not power on this pin and the power is on pin2.

Any help is appreciated.

Best regards, Ian

If the car electrics go below a certain voltage around 10 volts, the OVP relay kicks in and prevents damage to sensitive components. This is why often the ABS light comes on when the OVP relay is faulty.

The ABS light comes on when the ABS system is not operating. In the case of a faulty OVP relay, the ABS would be getting no electic power because the OVP relay has cut off the power, hence the ABS light comes on

Hi Kaptin,

Thanks for the tip. I won't be able to try this until tomorrow when the garage is open. Is the OVP near the battery ?

I have read a couple of other threads and it has threw up a couple of reminders about the symptoms prior to the total breakdown.

1, Sometimes the auto box would hold low gears for too long when running cold. In the winter (A very wet Ireland) I had to put a pen in the slot to select drive. Normally if the car is not in park you cannot turn the engine over. Related or not ???

2, I will try another key to make sure that the IR immobiliser is deactivating.

Thanks again, Ian

I tried another key and it did not change the problem.

Also I was able to start the engine using the starter selonoid and runs fine. Although the ABS and ESP faults display on the muti function disply.

I cannot select a Gear unless I stick a pen in the overide slot. So the gear selection is not working.

The story so far....

I found a fuse blown near the bulk head under a panel on right as you look from from. I replaced it and it blew. Repeated a few times but kept blowing. I removed all the ecu units and still the fuse blew. So I put a piece of wire in to see if we got smoke (and hopefully fire at this stage :D.) no fire  I replace the fuse and it didn't blow. I reassembled all ecu's and turned the key and she fired up not a bother. We were able to clear all faults in the ecu except the steering angle sensor fail.

Ill see how it goes over the next week and see if the problem comes back.

Steering angle can be reset by turning the wheel lock to lock
