w210 Kompressor bearings shot... cost?

Hello,
Posting on behalf of my bother... my interest is in the older cars.

He has a 2001 W210 Kompressor which has a loud whine - sounds like the Kompressor is shot, or at least bearings, if it has any. I haven't a clue because I haven't had a look myself.

However the dealer is looking for a grand for a new Kompressor unit. Is that realistic? Can these be rebuilt or are parts available?

I've searched this site and d'internet with no luck.

I should imagine the compressor would be a exchange unit, so you buy the new one and your old one has a surcharge attached as MB would recondition yours to new standard and then retail it. The one fitted to your car would possibly be a recon item also.

How many miles has the car done?

Hi,
w210 Kompressor? did,nt think a supercharged engine was available on 210 e class.
If its a 230 engine i would be looking for a second hand unit from a specialist MB breakers.
There is a drive bearing in the clutch drive end of the kompressor i believe can be replaced but i think it may have to be sourced from somewhere other than MB as they say it is,nt a serviceable item.

If it's not a Kompressor engine it'll be one of the pulleys or items on the serpentine belt

If that's the case, whip the belt off & spin everything to find what's noisy

Well I'm told the car's now been p/xed against a VW so the problem has gone away.

Interested about the comments a Kompressor wasn't available; it was a W210 E class and had a 2 litre supercharged engine = Kompressor, yes?

Certainly it had more poke than the 'normal' 2 litre W210 E Class.

Well you live and learn, never realised a kompressor engined W210 existed.

you and me both! i have only seen them in avantgarde spec and silver. wonder if it was last ditch effort to get rid of old w210 bodies with slk 200 engine fitted! stranger things have happened! all the best.

The Kompressors are quite popular here in Ireland; road tax is based on engine capacity.
