car came back with tail between legs and a fail sheet

NSF Track Rod End quoted 193.05 for pair
OSF as above
osf nsf upper arms 357.91 for pair

rear pads 76.96

How reasonable are these prices as they seem a little steep

MOT repair prices

Depends whether it includes labour or not! However, the price for a pair of track rod ends should cover both sides (one on each side). The price for rear pads is low if it includes labour and possibly a bit high if not.

Best get another quote from a good indy near you!

Having said that MB work is not cheap.

Might be worth a phone call to a MB dealership if you have any doubts. If you are in or near Glasgow, O'Neale's gets a good name for MB work. Do AC have any MB-trained mechanics?

Track rod ends are easily replaced - see DIY thread (includes parts prices at time of posting).

I've not come across upper arm failure before. Although they should be relatively easy to replace, I belive that the parts cost more as they are not a common part for replacement.

as in all things call a dealer, quote your VIN and get the cost of the parts first.

Rear pad's £35 and a hour's labour.
I dought that a pair of track rod ball joints can be more than £60.00 and half an hour to fit.
The issue with replacing front suspension components is that the vehicle needs four wheel tracking afterwards if thats inclusive.......still expensive! I had 4 whl alignment carried out here in Bristol (PROTYRE) £45.00.

Genuine MB track rod ends (The only things you should bother fitting IMHO) are approx £45-£50 each before VAT.

Upper arms: I've no idea.

4 wheel tracking at MB main dealer approx £160 before VAT

I tried local tyre places and gave up because of poor results. Eventually went to main dealer.

It's your call, but I think your indy sounds pretty reasonable, provided he's fitting genuine MB parts.

P.S. I have just spent £3600 repairing and rejuvenating my W210 so your MOT failure sounds pretty cheap to me. ;)

Track rod ends are £17 a side from ECP. Use a big hammer sideways (not on the top) to release the old ones. You'll need to have the tracking done once replaced.

Upper arms, no idea but while you're doing that it would be well worth considering having the lower control arm bushings done, as they can often induce a slight steering wobble at 60mphis when old.

Now - W210 E320cdi
If it is of any interest I have done a lot of work on my recently purchased E320 elegance estate using the information from this forum:
- spark plugs
- engine oil flush and change
- gearbox drain and new filter / fluid (the old ATF was jet black!)
- new lower ball joints
- new anti-roll bar drop links and bushes
- track rod ends
- new MAF

The cost of all of the above so far is abou£430, plus my time of course. The car is a '97 R-reg with 96K which I paid £1950 for. It is not perfect but good value for money. If I had had all of the above done at the garage I expect the bill would have been at least £1000, if not a lot more.

I found all of the jobs possible as DIY, although some were rather fiddly. The job to do the fron suspension joints, track rod ends and anti-roll bar bushes probably took me 5-6 hours and was the most difficult.

As regards parts, I bought a genuine Bosch MAF from GSF for about £160. The Ball joints and drop links were from Eurocarparts (Lemfroeder) - these seem like good quality at about half the price of genuine mercedes. The track rod ends were from GSF at about £14, probably not as good as the genuine thing but only 1/3 price and they are so easy to do that if they need replacing more often it is not a big deal!

regards,

Dave
