Driving home from work last night I indicated right made the turn and the indicator self cancelled. About a mile down the road I noticed the main beam was on but the lights were off since it was still broad daylight. After a bit of fumbling around I discovered that the stalk was loose and flopping around. I managed to get the main beam off by pushing it in but it came on again next time I indicated.

When I got home I found tht the rather flimsy trim piece on the steering column which surrounds the stalk was unlocated. I clipped it back in place but the stalk was still loose and the clip came back out again the first time it was used. The stalk move in and out about 0.5cm and is generally very slack

I suspect some sort of retaining clip has come off but cant see anything and dont know how to get the steering column shroud off to look.

Any thoughts guys? If I have to replace it does any one know how tricky a job it is?

Thanks

Pete

A quick update. I had a really good look at the stalk and it is completely shot so a new one is on the way (£75.60+vat) and will arrive on Saturday.

Just means I've got to fit it so if any one can give me some pointers on the removal/refitting of the Streeing Column shroud I'd be grateful

Cheers

It's easy enough to change but only if you have the correct tools. You will need a long reach torx to remove the airbag (I think t25ort27), A 10mm allen socket for the steering wheel + a big knuckle bar/torque wrench to undo it! As well as dropping the dash undertray & a few other minor trims around the steering column. If you do the job yourself, make sure the ignition key is OUT when removing + refitting the airbag. Once running again, you will have to turn steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to re learn steering sensors.

Thanks for that, I've got the tools but I did not realise I'd have to take the Steering Wheel & Air Bag of, would I be correct in guessing that the air bag is held in place by the sunken screws on the back of the sterring wheel spokes?

Do I need to disconnect the battery?

Cheers
