I have only had the car (1996 e200 classic estate) a couple of weeks and am slowly coming to terms with it. When the car is first started in the morning a fan or something cuts in apparently inside the roof light fitting above the rear view mirror. Not sure what this fan is for (I guess to prevent misting of the rearviem mirror or something like that) only it is quite noisy until it cuts out after a few minutes. Is my guess correct and how can I fix it? The big question is, how to remove bits to get to it.

I also intend to replace the radio cassette with a cd player. Anyone aware of any unforseen minefields there.

Thanks,

Greg.

theres a fan in there for pulling air over a sensor to determine air temp in the cabin.

yes, they go after a while...

try oiling it? remove covers for bulbs (pry off job) - remove bulbs. under bulbs are 2? phillips screws. remove switchgear and lights. you will see fan in there - oil it?

May be slightly different, Im basing this on my car.

Thanks for the advice. I will attack that job soonest however the car is being placed in the hands of Bursledon Motors tomorrow for a new Air Con Compressor. At least the older 230TE will get some use. I will post again once I have attacked the fan.

Problem sorted. It was spotted while the garage was doing the compressor and I must confess to taking the easy option. Compared to the four hundred plus for the compressor the mere 43 pound for a new fan seemed a small amount to get the system back to full working order so I bit the bullet.

Glad I did it as I am currently in Manchester and it chucking it down. No misting up which is a blessing with noisy kids in the back on a rainy day.
