Hi my 210 Estate sproadically refuses to start. Its as if the immobiliser/alarm has been trigged and the fuel is shut off. fiddling with fuses and pulling them in & out, seems to reset things and soon after say 20-30mins its starts again as if nothing was amiss - runs for a few weeks then you play Russian Roulette whenever you get in the car - the car has also start to stall leaving me stranded in the road unable to move blocking traffic etc.

I had car towed to indie in Cheltenham who hooked it up to his pc and found that the following fault:

EIS - electronic ignition switch ELCODE
MB number: 2105450208

Code B1059 - Faulit in CAN comm with control unit N10/1(Signal Aquisition & actuation module (SAM) driver side.)

the man duly removed the unit sat it on his desk and tried to order one. couldnt straight away so replaced in back in the car. The car fired up first time & he warned me it could happen again at any time.
I then had to be 350 miles away on holiday with all my family in a field when again it refused to start. I rang the man in cheltenham - he flatly refused to tell me where the unit was located so I could attempt his temporary 'fix' to get me & my family home... he refused to tell me. luckily for me it started after yet more fuse twiddling and now I am keen to replace this unit - (RRP GBP 200+vat) or breakers..
I need to know where this item is and what I need to remove to replace it etc

have any of you come accross this starting issue before or have a clue where I might start looking for the N10/1 SAM unit?

thanks for your help in advance.

Located in the right front fuse box.

The unit will need coding after fitment.

I would suggest you get one from a dealer if that is the problem.

It may also be a ignition switch problem or crankshaft position sensor. Does the engine crank?

Those CAN fault codes are so common. They may not mean anyting is wrong. I would say it needs further investigation after thinking about it.

Hi BlackC55 & Television thanks for your prompt replies - the engine does turn over and it just doesnt fire. I have been reading around the subject and wondered whether it could be something simple like that the key with a weak battery has opened the doors?central locking but hasnt switched off the alarm (another previous issue was that the alarm started up all the time) nor the immobiliser - could this be it? I only have one electronic key & one mechanic key to try.
I agree with you I would think it best to get it to another indie expert - theres one in Gloucester who was recommended by the AA tow man..
could the key be the answer to my woes.

I doubt it is the key that is the problem.

It does not strictly have a seperate immob. The key EIS and engine control unit are all interlinked for this purpose.
