The LCD displays for the Outside Temp and Clock have failed on my 2000 E320CDI. Does anyone know if they can be replaced individually or does the whole instrument binnacle require replacement. If they can be replaced individually, does anyone know where they can be purchased.

My X reg digital display is fine at the moment but like most others I expect the cluster to loose some pixels at some time in the future, they all seem to go the same way unfortunately.

The dilemma then is whether to, cough up the £600 the dealer wants for a new replacement and calibration, send it away for repair, or put up with it.

I think I could put up with loosing a pixel or two but not the complete temp and clock display (I don't know why MB didn't put a clock in the car where everybody could see it, little moan).

They do come up on e-bay but be careful your car does not use a rev counter calibrated to 7k rpm, the diesel model binnacles are djfferent to the petrol and show 5K tacho.

Sending the binnacle away is OK but you will loose the use of the car for a couple of weeks. Dronsfield dismantlers may have one you could purchase to keep you on the road while you do this. I think this is the way I would go.

I think I will buy one off e-bay when I get the chance to use as a spare for just such an eventuality.

I can check on your car on Friday, on some, the individual units can be changed.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Given that I use the car most days Ill put up with it for now and lookout for one on ebay or try a specialist breaker.

Good luck - I spent over a year on that search - totally fruitless. The closest I got was a diesel one on ebay but as mine was a petrol that didn't help. Breakers all said 'sorry'. I suspect, given the rarity, they have people in the trade who they send all the good ones to. I was all set to send mine off and borrow the mother in laws car for a week but the wife insisted I had a look in the dealer first and one thing led to another ...
Dealer didn't seem to care about the illegible displays either - he just offered me the same bugger all I'd have got with it working.

Well this evening I was lucky and picked up an instrument cluster on ebay for £28. Now I have no idea on whether the displays work but Ill send off for checking/repair at the site recommended above. Question is, can the EEPROM data chip containing the Chassis number, mileage and service mileage indicator be changed to match my car? The intention is then to swap units out and I will then offer mine up for sale

Normally MB remove the data and transfer it to the new unit. if you are are only going to use it while yours is away, should be no problem.
